Howlite is the stone of stillness. Where some crystals are about doing more, howlite is entirely about doing less — slowing down, cooling off, letting a spinning mind come to rest.

It is traditionally associated with patience above almost anything else, and I think that is exactly right. It is not a stone that fixes the thing you are frustrated about. It is the pause before you say something you will regret, the deep breath at the end of a bad day, the moment where the noise drops just enough that you can think again. Its white colour ties it to the crown chakra and to clarity, and its softness feels like a fitting match for what it is used for.

Howlite is best known for quieting an overactive mind, the reason it lives on so many nightstands. It is traditionally placed under a pillow or on a bedside table to support restful sleep and settle the thoughts that keep you awake, and it has long been used to cool anger and frustration, taking the edge off intense emotion before it spills over. It encourages patience and a slower, less reactive response when you are being tested, and supports emotional awareness by helping you notice what you are actually feeling rather than acting straight from it, which makes it a good meditation companion.
