I run Wholehearted Crystal Creations here in Regina, and almost nobody comes in asking for it by name — they pick it up because of the colour, that soft dusty blue-green with grey and darker blue mottling, and then ask what it is. It is a genuinely uncommon mineral with a lovely calm character. Let me tell you about it.

What Is Trolleite?

Trolleite is an aluminium phosphate mineral, first described in Sweden in the 1800s and named after Hans Gabriel Trolle-Wachtmeister, a Swedish chemist and statesman.

Almost all the trolleite in the crystal trade comes from Minas Gerais in Brazil. What is important to understand is that it is rarely a single mineral in the pieces you buy. Trolleite typically occurs intergrown with lazulite, scorzalite and quartz, and the material sold as trolleite is usually that mixture. That is why the colour varies so much from piece to piece — more lazulite gives deeper blue, more quartz gives paler grey-green.

This also explains its wide hardness range. Sources list trolleite anywhere from 5.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, largely because you are measuring a composite rather than one mineral.

It is genuinely uncommon rather than merely marketed as rare, which is unusual in the crystal world.

Trolleite is described as a high-vibration stone, and its associations sit firmly at the upper chakras — third eye and crown — with a focus on inner wisdom rather than outward action.

• Limit direct sun, which can fade the blue over time.
• Store it away from harder stones, since the softer areas scratch more easily than the quartz.
• Any gentle cleansing method works: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.
