What Is Ruby in Zoisite?

Ruby in zoisite is a naturally occurring rock containing three minerals: red ruby (corundum), green zoisite, and usually black hornblende or tschermakite forming the dark patches.

Its proper name is anyolite, from the Maasai word anyoli meaning green. That name points to its origin — it comes almost entirely from the Longido area of northern Tanzania, where it was discovered in the 1950s.

Two things worth knowing. First, the ruby is real ruby: genuine chromium-coloured corundum, at 9 on the Mohs scale. Second, zoisite is the same mineral species as tanzanite — tanzanite is simply blue-violet zoisite from a nearby part of Tanzania. So this affordable green stone is a close relative of one of the most expensive gems on the market.

The whole rock sits around 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, governed by the zoisite rather than the much harder ruby inclusions.

Ruby in zoisite is the stone of the reconciled self. Its defining association is strengthening the connection between heart and head so they work in alignment rather than in opposition.

• Avoid sudden temperature changes. Zoisite can be sensitive to thermal shock, and a rock made of three minerals with different expansion rates does not enjoy extremes.
• Skip ultrasonic cleaners for the same reason.
• Limit long, direct sun, which can affect the green over time.
• Storage is straightforward, though the ruby inclusions will scratch softer stones.
• Any gentle cleansing method works: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.
