What Is Chiastolite?

Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite, an aluminium silicate. What sets it apart is the dark cross visible when the crystal is cut across its length, formed by carbon-rich inclusions that concentrate along the crystal's edges as it grows. That distinctive pattern earned it its common name, the Cross Stone.

Andalusite crystallises in the orthorhombic system and sits at roughly 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, so it is a hard, hard-wearing stone. Much of the best cross-patterned material comes from China, Spain, Australia, Chile and Russia.

• Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged salt, which can dull any polish over time.
• Cleanse it however you like: running water, moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.
• Recharge it on the earth. Given its grounding nature, resting it on soil or stone is particularly fitting.
