I run Wholehearted Crystal Creations here in Regina, and when people ask me whether angelite can go in water, the honest answer is more dramatic than usual: not just "it might get damaged" but "it will chemically become something else". Let me explain, along with what this soft, lovely stone is used for.

What Is Angelite?

Angelite is the trade name for a pale blue variety of anhydrite — calcium sulfate. Most of it comes from Peru.

The name anhydrite means "without water", and that is the key to everything. Gypsum, which is what selenite is, is calcium sulfate with water molecules built into its structure. Anhydrite is the same compound without them.

Which means that if anhydrite is exposed to water for long enough, it absorbs it and gradually converts into gypsum. That is not a metaphor or a metaphysical claim — it is a documented mineral transformation, and it happens in nature at scale. Soak your angelite and you are, slowly, turning it into selenite. It will also expand slightly and crumble as it goes.

Angelite is soft at 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, with a matte, chalky, almost porcelain-like surface. It often shows white veining and occasionally small reddish flecks of hematite.

• Never put angelite in water. This is not just about surface damage — prolonged water exposure chemically converts anhydrite into gypsum, causing it to swell, soften and crumble. Dry cloth only.
• Avoid humidity too. A steamy bathroom is a poor long-term home.
• No salt, no acids, no ultrasonic cleaners.
• Handle it gently. At 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale it scratches and chips very easily.
• Store it separately and padded, away from harder stones.
• Dry cleansing only: moonlight, sound, smoke, or resting it near a selenite plate.

Is Angelite Right for You?

If you have a prayer or meditation practice, work with dreams, or want something quietly soothing for a bedside table, angelite is a lovely choice — and the mineralogy makes it a genuinely interesting thing to own.

It is not right for you if you want something durable to carry or wear, or if you like water cleansing as part of your practice. If you want similar calm in a hardy stone, blue lace agate will take far more handling.
