What Is Apophyllite?

Apophyllite is a phyllosilicate mineral, most commonly found as clear or white pyramidal crystals, with green and pink varieties also occurring. The overwhelming majority of specimens come from the basalt quarries around Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra, India, where it grows in cavities alongside stilbite, heulandite and zeolites.

Its name is a small piece of mineralogical wit. It comes from the Greek apo meaning off and phyllon meaning leaf — because when apophyllite is heated, it loses its water content and exfoliates, flaking apart into leaf-like layers. Early mineralogists named it for how it falls to pieces.

That tells you something practical: it has perfect basal cleavage and is soft at 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale. Apophyllite points chip and flake easily, and clusters shed crystals if handled roughly.

Green apophyllite gets its colour from vanadium. Pink apophyllite is genuinely uncommon and priced accordingly.

Apophyllite Meaning and Symbolism

Apophyllite is described as one of the highest-vibration stones, and its reputation follows directly from how it behaves with light. It is transparent, brilliantly reflective, and forms in pyramids — all of which feed associations with clarity, transmission and connection upward.

How to Cleanse and Care for Apophyllite

Apophyllite is more fragile than it looks, and heat is its particular enemy.

• Keep it away from heat. Its name comes from the fact that heating drives off its water content and makes it flake apart. No hot water, no radiators, no hot cars.
• Keep water brief and cool. A gentle rinse is tolerable; soaking is not.
• Handle clusters by the matrix, never by the crystal points — they snap off very easily.
• No ultrasonic cleaners. Perfect cleavage plus vibration is a bad combination.
• Store it padded and separate, since at 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale most stones will scratch it.
• Dry cleansing is safest: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.

Is Apophyllite Right for You?

If you have a meditation practice, want something genuinely beautiful for a shelf, or are drawn to high-vibration stones, apophyllite is a lovely choice. Clusters in particular are among the best value spectacular specimens you can buy.

It is not right for you if you want something to carry or handle often — it is soft, cleavable and heat-sensitive. If you want clarity and amplification in a rugged stone, clear quartz is the practical alternative.

Usually stilbite, a peach-pink zeolite that commonly forms alongside apophyllite in the Indian basalt deposits. The combination of clear pyramids on soft peach is one of the most sought-after natural pairings.
