What Is Black Onyx?

Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, part of the quartz family. Strictly speaking, onyx is defined by its parallel banding — which is why banded onyx, with its visible layers, is arguably the more literal onyx of the two.

Solid black onyx does occur naturally, but it is uncommon in the quantities the jewellery trade needs. So most black onyx on the market is grey or banded chalcedony that has been dyed black.

Before that sounds alarming, it is worth knowing this is not a modern shortcut. The practice of treating chalcedony to deepen its colour dates back to Roman times and is one of the oldest gem treatments we know of. The dye penetrates the porous stone and the result is stable and permanent — it will not wash out or fade under normal use.

So it is real chalcedony, permanently treated, using a technique two thousand years old. That is different from a fake, and different again from something sold as untreated when it is not.

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it is hard, durable and takes an excellent polish, which is why it has been a jewellery staple for so long.

• Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged soaking, particularly for dyed pieces.
• Skip ultrasonic cleaners, which can be hard on treated stones.
• Keep it away from perfume and hairspray if worn as jewellery.
• Storage is easy — hard enough to live alongside most of your collection.
• Any cleansing method works: moonlight, sound, smoke, running water or a selenite plate.

Is Black Onyx Right for You?

If you are in the middle of something long and hard, black onyx is one of the most fitting stones there is. It is also an excellent everyday jewellery stone — hard, elegant, and it goes with everything.

If you want something uplifting or energising, this is the wrong direction entirely. Black onyx is sober by nature. And if you specifically want untreated natural stone, ask before buying, because most black onyx is dyed.
