Which is more or less exactly what it is. Let me be upfront about that, and then tell you why it is still worth owning.

What Is Goldstone?

Goldstone is a manufactured glass. It is made by melting silica with copper salts under carefully controlled low-oxygen conditions, so that as the melt cools, tiny copper crystals form and stay suspended throughout the glass. Those crystals catch the light, producing the characteristic glitter.

Getting it right is genuinely difficult — the cooling has to be precise or the copper either dissolves entirely or clumps. That difficulty is part of the reason its production was historically a closely guarded secret.

The traditional story credits the Miotti family of Venetian glassmakers, who held a monopoly on it in the seventeenth century. Its Italian name, avventurina, comes from a ventura — by chance — supposedly because the process was discovered accidentally. That name is also where the mineral aventurine gets its name, which is a nice inversion: a natural stone named after a man-made glass rather than the other way round.

Blue and purple goldstone use cobalt or manganese rather than copper. At 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale it is moderately hard but, being glass, it chips rather than scratches.
