Astrophyllite is a rare titanosilicate mineral that forms in bladed, radiating sprays — golden to bronze-brown blades fanning out from a central point through a dark host rock.

The name comes from the Greek astron, star, and phyllon, leaf, describing exactly that radiating bladed habit. It is a genuinely apt name, which is not always the case in mineralogy.

It is rare in gem-quality material. The best-known sources are the Kola Peninsula in Russia and parts of Norway, with some material from Greenland and Colorado. It forms in alkaline igneous rocks, an unusual environment that partly explains its scarcity.

At 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale it is soft, and the bladed structure means it has perfect cleavage — the blades can flake and separate. Most pieces you will see are polished slabs, palm stones or tumbles rather than raw specimens, precisely because raw astrophyllite is so fragile.
