Pork stone is a banded red calcite — calcium carbonate, the same mineral family as orange calcite, green calcite and mangano calcite. Its pink and red banding comes from iron content laid down in layers as the mineral formed.

It is also sold as bacon calcite, red banded calcite or candy calcite depending on the seller, so if you have seen it under another name, it is the same material.

The practical thing to understand is that calcite is soft — 3 on the Mohs scale, which is softer than a copper coin. It is also a carbonate, which means it reacts chemically with acids. Both facts shape how you have to treat it, and I would rather tell you now than have you find out.

How to Cleanse and Care for Pork Stone

This is the important section. Calcite is one of the more vulnerable materials in a collection.

• Keep it away from water. Calcite is slightly soluble and will dull, etch and lose its polish with repeated water contact. A dry cloth is the right tool. No rinses, no water cleansing, no moon water.
• No acids of any kind. Vinegar, lemon, and most household cleaners will visibly etch calcite — it fizzes, which is a classic mineral identification test and a terrible thing to do to your stone.
• No salt. Abrasive and, at 3 on the Mohs scale, damaging.
• Store it separately and padded. Almost everything else you own will scratch it, and it chips easily if dropped.
• Keep it out of direct sun, which can fade the red and pink banding.
• Dry cleansing only: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.

Is Pork Stone Right for You?

If you want something cheerful, a little unusual, and genuinely useful for clearing the feel of a room, pork stone is a lovely thing to own. It also makes a memorable gift, for reasons that need no explanation.

It is not the right choice if you want something you can handle carelessly or wear daily. At 3 on the Mohs scale it needs to live somewhere safe. If you want the same cleansing character in a tougher stone, clear quartz or selenite are alternatives — though selenite is softer still.
