Shungite Meaning & Crystal Healing Properties

Hi, I am Laurie, and shungite is the stone I get asked the most loaded questions about. I run Wholehearted Crystal Creations here in Regina, and shungite arrives surrounded by more confident claims than almost anything else in the trade. Some of what is said about it is genuinely remarkable and true. Some of it is not supported at all. Let me separate those, because the true parts are interesting enough on their own.

What Is Shungite?

Shungite is a black, carbon-rich rock found almost exclusively around Lake Onega in the Karelia region of northwestern Russia. It is named after the village of Shunga.

Its age is the genuinely astonishing part: shungite deposits are approximately two billion years old. That predates most multicellular life. How organic carbon accumulated in that quantity so early is still not fully settled among geologists.

It also contains fullerenes — hollow spherical carbon molecules, sometimes called buckyballs. Their discovery earned a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996, and shungite is one of very few natural sources. That part is real and documented.

Shungite is graded by carbon content. Elite or noble shungite is 90 to 98 percent carbon, silvery and brittle. Regular black shungite is around 30 to 50 percent carbon and is what most tumbles, towers and pyramids are made from.

There is also a documented history of use: Peter the Great established a spa in Karelia in the early 1700s based on the local shungite-filtered springs.

About the Electronics Claims

Shungite is very widely sold as protection from electromagnetic fields from phones, routers and computers. You will see this everywhere, including on stickers sold to attach to devices.

I want to be straightforward: this is not supported by scientific evidence. There is no good research showing that a piece of shungite near a device meaningfully affects electromagnetic fields, or that everyday exposure from household electronics causes harm that would need blocking.

What I will say is that plenty of people keep shungite by their desk and find it grounding to have there, in the same way any stone can serve as a reminder to step away from a screen. That is a real and reasonable use. It is just not the same claim.

The genuinely interesting things about shungite — its age, its fullerene content, its documented history — do not need embellishing.

Shungite Meaning and Symbolism

Shungite is a stone of grounding and clearing. Its associations centre on shielding from negativity, whether from people, places or your own circling thoughts.

Its extraordinary age gives it a particular symbolic weight. This is material from a period before almost anything alive, which lends itself naturally to ideas of foundation, endurance and the very long view.

It is also traditionally used for clearing heavy or toxic thinking — the mental equivalent of tidying a cluttered room.

Chakra-wise, shungite works with the root chakra. It is associated with the element of Earth and with Cancer, Scorpio and Capricorn.

How to Use Shungite

• Hold it when you feel drained by other people or by a place.
• Keep a piece at a desk as a grounding presence and a prompt to take breaks from screens.
• Carry it through situations that reliably leave you depleted.
• Sit with it when heavy or circling thoughts need clearing.
• Pair it with black tourmaline or hematite for a full grounding set.

How to Cleanse and Care for Shungite

• Expect black residue, especially on unpolished pieces — it is carbon, and it will mark hands and fabric. This is normal.
• Keep water brief. Regular shungite tolerates a rinse, but elite shungite is brittle and flaky and is best kept dry.
• Handle elite shungite very carefully. At high carbon content it is fragile and crumbles readily.
• Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.
• Store polished pieces separately, since at 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale they scratch easily.
• Any dry cleansing method works: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.

Is Shungite Right for You?

If you want a grounding stone with a genuinely extraordinary geological story, or you like the idea of holding something two billion years old, shungite is a fascinating thing to own.

If you are buying it specifically to block electromagnetic fields, I would rather you knew that claim is not supported before you spend money on it. And if you want protection and grounding with a longer track record in crystal practice, black tourmaline is the more established choice.

Why does my shungite leave black marks?
Because it is largely carbon. Unpolished and elite pieces in particular will mark hands, fabric and surfaces. This is completely normal and not a defect. Polished pieces shed much less.

Can shungite go in water?
Regular polished shungite tolerates a brief rinse. Elite shungite is brittle and flaky and is better kept dry. Note that although shungite has a documented history in water filtration in Karelia, I would not recommend making drinking water with a decorative piece — that is a different product with different processing.
