What Is Ocean Jasper?

Ocean jasper is an orbicular jasper — a silica-rich chalcedony whose defining feature is the round or oval "orbs" scattered through it, each one a small radiating growth of quartz and feldspar that formed as the stone crystallised.

It comes from a single known area on the northwest coast of Madagascar, near Marovato. The location is genuinely remote and the original deposit was partly tidal, accessible only at low tide, which meant mining had to work around the sea. That deposit was declared exhausted in the mid-2000s.

Newer deposits have since been found nearby and material is still available, but the classic vivid green-and-pink orbicular pieces from the original find are increasingly scarce and priced accordingly. If you see an older piece with strong, well-defined orbs and rich colour, that is worth paying attention to.

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it is hardy, takes a beautiful polish, and needs very little care.
