It is also genuinely beautiful, usually arriving as sparkling druzy geode slices in the softest blush pink.

What Is Pink Amethyst?

Pink amethyst is a variety of quartz with a soft pink to peachy colour, usually found as druzy-lined geode sections rather than the large points you see with purple amethyst.

Almost all of it comes from a single area — the Patagonia region of Argentina, chiefly Choique in Neuquén Province. It was known before, but it only began arriving in quantity in the late 2010s, which makes it one of the newest widely available crystals.

Here is the honest part. Purple amethyst gets its colour from iron combined with natural irradiation, producing colour centres in the crystal structure. Analysis of pink material has found its colour comes largely from fine hematite inclusions instead. On that basis, a number of gemmologists argue it should not be called amethyst at all, and prefer pink quartz or rose amethyst.

I mention it because you may see the argument and wonder if you have been misled. You have not — pink amethyst is a real, natural, unheated quartz from Argentina. The debate is about naming, not authenticity. At 7 on the Mohs scale it is as durable as any quartz.

• Keep it out of long, direct sunlight. Like all amethyst-family quartz the colour can fade with prolonged UV exposure.
• Avoid heat and sudden temperature changes.
• Store geode slices padded and upright so the druzy edges are not knocked.
• Any cleansing method works: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.

Is Pink Amethyst Right for You?

If you want emotional support that stays steady, are drawn to amethyst but want something warmer, or love the sparkle of a druzy geode, pink amethyst is a lovely choice. It is also genuinely scarce, which some people enjoy.

If you want the strongest heart stone available, rose quartz is more focused and considerably less expensive. And if the naming debate bothers you, amethyst proper is undisputed.
