Yellow calcite is calcium carbonate, coloured a soft golden yellow by trace iron and other impurities. It sits in the same large family as green calcite, orange calcite, mangano calcite and optical calcite.

Calcite is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth — it is the main component of limestone, marble and chalk, and it forms stalactites and stalagmites in caves. It also has a genuinely remarkable range of crystal habits, with more distinct described forms than almost any other mineral.

Most yellow calcite in shops is tumbled or roughly polished, showing the characteristic soft, slightly waxy lustre rather than a glassy shine. Colour ranges from pale cream-yellow to a deeper honey.

• Keep it away from water. Calcium carbonate is slightly soluble, and repeated water contact will dull, etch and destroy the polish. Dry cloth only — no rinsing, no water cleansing.
• No acids. Vinegar, citrus and most household cleaners will visibly etch it, sometimes within seconds.
• No salt, which is abrasive and damaging at this hardness.
• Store it separately and padded. At 3 on the Mohs scale nearly everything else you own will scratch it, and it chips readily.
• Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the yellow.
• Dry cleansing only: moonlight, sound, smoke, or a selenite plate.

Is Yellow Calcite Right for You?
