I run Wholehearted Crystal Creations here in Regina, and customers usually come in looking for the solid black kind, then get distracted by these instead — because the banding is genuinely beautiful, layer after layer of cream and coffee and black, like a cross-section through something ancient. Which, of course, it is. Let me tell you what it is and what it is used for.

What Is Banded Onyx?

Banded onyx is a layered variety of chalcedony, part of the quartz family. Its parallel bands of black, white, cream and brown formed as silica-rich water deposited in successive layers inside a cavity over a very long period.

Here is a nice technicality: onyx is properly defined by that straight, parallel banding. So banded onyx is arguably more genuinely onyx than the solid black onyx most people picture — and unlike much black onyx, banded material is generally not dyed, since the whole appeal is its natural layering.

It is closely related to sardonyx, which shows reddish-brown bands alternating with white, and to agate more broadly — the difference between agate and onyx being that agate's banding tends to be curved and irregular while onyx's runs straight and parallel.

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it is hard, takes a lovely polish and is well suited to carving, which is why it turns up so often as palm stones and bowls.

Banded onyx is a stone of grounded confidence. Where solid black onyx leans toward endurance and protection, the banded variety carries a warmer reputation — happiness, good fortune and personal power alongside the grounding.

Its most distinctive traditional use is around decision-making — specifically, making decisions during difficult periods when your judgement feels compromised by stress. That is quite a precise claim and a genuinely useful one.

• Water is fine. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale a rinse under cool running water is no trouble.
• Skip harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.
• Limit long, direct sun, which can gradually soften the contrast between the bands.
• Storage is easy — hard enough to live with the rest of your collection, though it will scratch calcites and selenite.
• Any cleansing method works: moonlight, sound, smoke, running water or a selenite plate.

Is Banded Onyx Right for You?

If you want grounding with some warmth to it, are facing a decision under pressure, or simply love visible natural pattern, banded onyx is a lovely choice. Palm stones in particular are very satisfying objects to own.
