Crazy lace agate is a banded chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — distinguished by its extraordinarily contorted banding in cream, white, red, brown and grey.

That chaos has a cause. The bands formed as silica-rich fluids filled a cavity in volcanic rock, but the rock was subsequently folded, faulted and deformed by geological pressure, twisting the once-orderly layers into loops and swirls. What you are looking at is a record of the stone being put under stress and holding together — which, given what it is used for, is rather fitting.

It comes almost entirely from northern Mexico, particularly Chihuahua, where it is sometimes called Mexican lace agate or the laughter stone.

A note on colour: naturally occurring crazy lace runs to warm earthy tones — creams, rust reds, browns. Vividly dyed pink, purple and turquoise versions exist and are common. Neither is a problem as long as you know which you are buying.

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it is hardy and needs very little care.
