If moonstone belongs to the full moon, black moonstone belongs to the new one. It is often used for beginnings that have not taken shape yet, for sitting comfortably in the dark part of a cycle, and for intuition with a grounded, protective edge. Many people work with it when they are between chapters and not ready to name what comes next.
