Amethyst has one of the longest and best-documented histories of any crystal. Its name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos, roughly "not intoxicated" — the Greeks believed it protected against drunkenness, and wine goblets were sometimes carved from it. That old association with sobriety and clear-headedness has carried through into how the stone is used today.

It was considered a precious gem, on a par with emerald and ruby, right up until enormous Brazilian deposits were found in the 1800s and the price collapsed. That is the only reason it is affordable now. It is exactly the same stone that once sat in royal and ecclesiastical collections.

Modern practice centres it on calm, clarity and intuition. The third eye and crown associations put it firmly in the territory of insight and spiritual connection rather than grounding or drive, and its most common everyday use — sleep — fits that quietening character.

Amethyst is traditionally used for calm and peace, dissolving anger, anxiety and general agitation, and it is the crystal people most often reach for to support restful sleep, usually kept on a nightstand or under a pillow. It is long associated with quieting an overactive mind and easing overthinking and rumination, with intuition and insight through the third eye, with emotional balance through stress, grief and change, and with clarity and sobriety, its oldest association. Chakra-wise, amethyst works with the third eye and crown. It is associated with the elements of Air and Water, with Pisces, Aquarius, Aries and Capricorn, and it is the February birthstone.
