Hi, I'm Laurie — the maker and rock-lover behind Wholehearted Crystal Creations here in Regina, SK. Of all the stones that pass through my hands, howlite is the one I reach for on the loud, overstuffed days. It's quiet in the best way. Here's everything I've learned about its meaning, its healing properties, and how I actually use it.
Quick Answer
Howlite is a calming white-and-grey stone known as a gentle antidote to a busy, anxious mind. Its meaning centres on stillness, patience and emotional calm. People reach for howlite to ease stress, quiet overthinking, support restful sleep and cool down anger. It's linked to the crown and third eye chakras, and it's soft enough that many of us keep it close as a bracelet or a pocket stone. If you want one stone for "help me slow down," this is it.
What Is Howlite?
Howlite is a natural borate mineral, usually white or pale grey with those distinctive charcoal veins running through it — a lot of people say it looks like marble or a little like a robin's egg. It was first identified in Nova Scotia, which always makes me smile as a fellow Canadian. Because it's so porous and pale, howlite is also the stone most often dyed to imitate turquoise, lapis or other bright crystals (more on that below).
Howlite Meaning
The heart of howlite's meaning is calm awareness. It's often called the "stone of patience" or a "stone of stillness." Where some crystals feel energising or fiery, howlite feels like a long exhale. I think of it as the friend who gently says, "you don't have to solve everything tonight." Traditionally it's associated with reducing reactivity — that quick flash of frustration or worry — and helping you respond from a steadier place instead.
Howlite Healing Properties
Here are the metaphysical and emotional properties howlite is best loved for:
- Stress and anxiety relief. Howlite is one of the classic "anxiety stones." It's said to absorb tension and quiet the mental chatter that keeps you spinning.
- Better sleep. This is the request I hear most. Howlite has a long reputation for calming an overactive mind at bedtime — many people tuck one under the pillow or keep it on the nightstand.
- Patience and emotional balance. It's traditionally used to soften anger, impatience and self-criticism, making space for a more even mood.
- Focus and clarity. By turning down the background noise, howlite is believed to help you concentrate and think clearly — lovely for study or meditation.
- Connection to your higher self. Tied to the crown and third eye chakras, howlite is used in meditation to encourage insight, calm intuition and a sense of perspective.
A gentle note: crystals are a beautiful support for your wellbeing, not a replacement for medical or mental-health care. If you're struggling, please reach out to someone you trust.
Howlite & the Chakras
Howlite is most associated with the crown chakra (stillness, higher awareness) and the third eye chakra (intuition, insight). Its cool, quieting energy makes it a natural fit for meditation and for settling the mind before sleep or journaling.
How to Use Howlite
This is where it gets practical — and easy. A few of my favourite ways:
- Wear it. A howlite bracelet keeps that calm energy on you all day. I like it for meetings, travel and anywhere I know I'll feel a little wound up.
- Keep a pocket stone. A smooth howlite tumbled pocket stone is perfect to hold and breathe with when things get overwhelming. There's a slightly larger medium howlite tumble too if you like a bit more weight in your hand.
- Set it by your bed. A howlite tower on the nightstand is a pretty, intentional way to invite calmer sleep.
- Use it in self-care. A howlite wand is lovely for a slow, grounding facial or shoulder massage at the end of the day.
- Meditate with it. Hold howlite at your crown or third eye, close your eyes, and let your breath slow down. Simple and surprisingly effective.

Caring for & Cleansing Howlite
Howlite is a soft stone (around 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale), so treat it a little gently. It can scratch and it doesn't love long water soaks — a quick rinse and a soft cloth is plenty. To cleanse its energy, I prefer no-water methods: a few hours on a selenite plate, a smoke cleanse, moonlight on the windowsill, or simply setting a clear intention. Because howlite is porous, avoid salt water and harsh cleaners, especially with dyed pieces.
Is "Blue Howlite" or "White Turquoise" Real?
Great question, and worth knowing before you shop. Bright blue "howlite" and vivid "turquoise howlite" are almost always natural howlite (or its cousin magnesite) that's been dyed. That's perfectly fine as long as it's sold honestly — dyed howlite is beautiful and affordable. Similarly, a lot of "white turquoise" on the market is actually howlite. Natural, undyed howlite is white to grey with dark veining, exactly like the pieces I carry. If a stone's colour looks too electric to be true, it's usually dyed.
Who Is Howlite For?
Howlite is associated with the zodiac signs Gemini and Virgo, but honestly, it's for anyone whose mind runs fast. If you're a worrier, a light sleeper, a deep feeler, or you just want a stone that helps you come back to centre — howlite is a wonderful, gentle place to start.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is howlite good for?
Howlite is best known for calm — easing stress and anxiety, quieting an overactive mind, supporting restful sleep, and encouraging patience and emotional balance.
Is howlite a good stone for sleep?
Yes. Howlite has a long reputation as a bedtime stone. Many people keep one under the pillow or on the nightstand to help settle a racing mind before sleep.
What chakra is howlite?
Howlite is linked to the crown chakra and the third eye chakra, which is part of why it's such a favourite for meditation and calm, clear thinking.
Can howlite go in water?
A brief rinse is okay, but don't soak it. Howlite is soft and porous, so long water exposure (especially salt water) can damage it or fade dyed pieces. Dry cleansing methods are safer.
Is blue howlite real howlite?
Usually it's natural howlite that has been dyed blue to resemble turquoise. The stone itself is real howlite; the vivid colour is added. Undyed howlite is white to grey with dark veins.
What's the difference between howlite and white turquoise?
Often there isn't one — much of the "white turquoise" sold today is actually howlite. True white turquoise is rare, so if you're offered an affordable white "turquoise," it's very likely howlite.
