Quick answer: Real moldavite is a natural green tektite with a wrinkled, etched, almost tree-bark surface and irregular, often elongated bubbles inside. Green glass fakes tend to look too clean, too evenly coloured, or too smooth, with perfectly round bubbles. Buy from a seller who shows the exact piece you will receive.
Why moldavite is so often imitated
Moldavite is one of the most talked-about stones in the crystal world, and that popularity has a downside: green glass sold under its name. I see the questions come in all the time, so I wanted to write down how I look at a piece before I would call it moldavite.
Moldavite is a tektite, a natural glass thought to have formed about 15 million years ago when a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany. Pieces are found mostly in the Czech Republic. Because it is a natural glass, "it looks like glass" is not a red flag by itself. What matters is what kind of glass, and how it got its shape.
This guide is about choosing a piece with confidence. If you want the traditional meaning and uses, my reference page covers that: Moldavite Meaning & Crystal Healing Properties.
What genuine moldavite tends to look like
- A sculpted, wrinkled surface. Natural moldavite is usually etched by weathering into ridges, pits and fine wormy lines, a bit like bark or crumpled foil. That texture is a sign of how it formed, not a flaw.
- Colour in the green range. Think bottle green to olive or brownish green, often looking darker in thick spots and brighter where the piece is thin.
- Irregular bubbles and swirls. Held to the light, natural pieces can show tiny elongated or oddly shaped bubbles and flow lines inside.
- Individual shapes. No two natural pieces match. A tray of identical-looking stones is worth questioning.
Common signs of glass imitations
- Too smooth and too perfect. A shiny, evenly moulded surface with no etching often points to man-made glass.
- Perfectly round bubbles. Manufactured glass often traps neat spherical bubbles, where natural pieces tend to show irregular or stretched ones.
- Very even, bright colour. A uniform, jewel-like green with no variation is a caution.
- Identical pieces in bulk. Many near-matching stones, especially at very low prices, deserve a second look.
- Faceted "moldavite". Faceted gems are cut, which is a legitimate use of the material, but ask the seller to be clear about what you are getting.
No visual check is a lab test. If a piece is a significant purchase for you, a gemologist can confirm it, and a reputable seller will welcome that question.
What to ask a seller before you buy
- Will I receive the exact piece in the photos, and are there close-ups of the surface?
- Can you tell me the weight and size?
- Is this raw, tumbled or cut, and is anything added to it, such as a setting or wire wrap?
- Where did you source it, and will you stand behind it if I am not happy?
At Wholehearted Crystal Creations, our raw moldavite specimens are sold as the exact piece pictured, so what you see is what you get.
Choosing a form: raw, pocket piece or necklace
- Raw specimens show off the natural texture best and are a great way to learn what real moldavite looks like. Browse Moldavite Raw Specimen #M1, #M2 and #M4, each a one-of-a-kind piece.
- Pocket specimens are small and easy to carry. See the Moldavite Pocket Specimen (MED) and the (SM).
- Wire-wrapped necklaces keep the raw texture visible while making it wearable. Take a look at our full moldavite collection.
A gentle note on how people use moldavite
Traditionally, moldavite is described as an intense stone of transformation, and many people suggest starting slowly with a small piece and paying attention to how it feels. That is intuitive and personal, not a medical or scientific claim.
Frequently asked questions
Is real moldavite expensive?
Genuine moldavite is a rare, sought-after material, so very cheap pieces labelled as moldavite are worth questioning. Prices vary a lot with size, quality and form.
Is moldavite just glass?
It is a natural glass called a tektite, formed by a meteorite impact. Man-made green glass sold as moldavite is a different thing.
Can I tell real moldavite by the bubbles alone?
Bubbles help, but they are only one clue. Look at the surface texture, colour and overall shape together, and ask the seller questions.
Is raw or cut moldavite better?
Neither is better. Raw pieces show the natural texture that helps you recognise genuine material, while cut stones are a matter of taste and use.
Does Wholehearted Crystal Creations ship moldavite from Canada?
Yes, our moldavite ships from Regina, SK.
