I have watched this happen more times than I can count. Someone comes into my world overwhelmed — too many tabs open, too many decisions, a brain that will not stop humming at 2am — and they reach past the rose quartz, past the amethyst, and pick up a piece of fluorite. They almost never know why. They just say it feels quiet.
That is fluorite for you. It does not announce itself the way a big amethyst cathedral does. It waits. And then it does the least glamorous, most useful thing a crystal can do: it helps you think.
Fluorite has been the crystal I reach for most in my own life, and it is far and away the deepest part of my collection here in Regina. So let me tell you everything I know about it.
What is fluorite?
Fluorite is calcium fluoride (CaF₂), a mineral that forms in glassy cubes and octahedrons in an astonishing range of colours — purple, green, blue, teal, yellow, clear, and the banded “rainbow” fluorite that layers several at once.
Here is my favourite piece of fluorite trivia, and it is completely true: the word fluorescence is named after fluorite. Scientists first described the glow-under-UV phenomenon in this mineral, and the mineral gave the phenomenon its name. Many fluorites still light up electric blue or violet under a blacklight — which is exactly why I hang onto UV-reactive pieces when I find them, like this Etched Black Fluorite Raw Specimen.
It is also a soft stone. Fluorite sits at about 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it scratches easily, cleaves along clean planes, and does not love water. I will come back to that in the care section, because it genuinely matters.

How to use fluorite
- On your desk. A tower or raw specimen beside your screen — the classic, and the one I actually do myself.
- In your pocket. A tumbled stone you can reach for in a meeting, an exam, or a hard conversation.
- Before a decision. Hold it, breathe, and ask the question out loud. Fluorite is for hearing your own answer.
- During study or deep work. Keep it in your line of sight, not buried in a drawer.
- Under a blacklight. If you have a UV-reactive piece, this is worth doing at least once. It is genuinely magic.
How to cleanse & care for fluorite (read this part)
Fluorite is soft — about 4 on the Mohs scale — and this is the crystal I get the most heartbroken emails about. Please protect yours:
Do NOT: soak fluorite in water, cleanse it in salt water, or leave it in direct sunlight. Water and salt will pit and dull the surface, and sunlight will fade that beautiful purple to a washed-out grey. This damage is permanent.
Instead, cleanse fluorite with:
- Sound — a singing bowl, a bell, or even your own voice
- Smoke — sage, palo santo, or incense
- Moonlight — a windowsill overnight, brought in before the morning sun hits it
- Selenite — rest it on a selenite plate or charging slab
Handle it gently, store it where it will not knock against harder stones like quartz, and it will stay gorgeous for a lifetime.
